Travelling with older family members

The elderly have become seasoned travellers. Better travel and public transport and disposable income mean that there are more and better opportunities for older travellers.

The elderly are no longer sedentary stay-at-homes. On the contrary, they’re full of energy and have plenty of free time to make the most of in the best way possible, whether on a fantastic beach, strolling through nature at a mountain hotel

Excessively hot destinations can be bad choices, for health reasons, but spring and autumn temperatures can be great for a boost.

If we travel with them it’s vital to choose the destination to keep one step ahead and adapt to their needs. Many hotels now have activities for everyone, so that grandchildren and grandparents can have a great time together.

It’s important to take care in summer, as the considerable rise in temperature, coupled with changes in environment and routine can have a negative effect.

Much of the advice for making sure the elderly have a great holiday is common sense, but it’s still not a bad idea to check:

  • Keep hydrated
  • Wear light clothing
  • Avoid going out when it’s too hot
  • Check health before travelling; take enough medicine to get through an emergency without having to search for an emergency pharmacy when you least expect it.
  • Take copies of medical records in case of any emergency, as well as medical cards and prescriptions, just in case.
  • Avoid heavy meals, energy drinks and alcohol.
